This is not the first time the 17-year-old male bear has been flown north in a helicopter after raiding cabins. The previous time was in 2001.

After breaking into several cabins at Kapp Laila last Friday, a male polar bear was anesthetized and transported by helicopter to Nordaustlandet by The Governor of Svalbard. The bears comes from a family with many cabin burglaries on its conscience.
Jon Aars, a polar bear researcher at the Norwegian Polar Institute, said it is a 17-year-old male bear. It is also labeled as a cub observed at Kvalvågen in 2000 with his mother and brother. In 2001 the family, after a cabin raid, was flown from Akseløya to Edgeøya.
"We have caught him several times after that, most recently in spring in Storfjorden," Aars said. "His brother was accidentally shot in the foot in 2010 trying to get into a cabin not far from Hornsund. He later died from the damage."
