Town hit hard
The local community is being strongly affected by two deaths. A 24-hour counseling hotline is available at the hospital.
Anne Søvold Vikanes and Svalbard Church Priest Leif Magne Helgesen are both members of Longyearbyen's psychosocial crisis team. They are encouraging people experiencing difficulty to contact the team's hotline or other resources.

A local man in his 40s and his cohabitant in her late 20s both chose to take their own lives within a short time of each other.
"We have had two tragic deaths in the last two weeks in our community," said Svalbard Church Priest Leif Magne Helgesen. "It has hit those who are close to them especially, but also all of us. It is important that we look at each other and support each other in this difficult and vulnerable situation."
Crisis team
Anne Søvold Vikanes, head of the Longyearbyen's psychosocial crisis team, said a 24-hour contact phone line was established last weekend. The crisis team consists of personnel from Longyearbyen Hospital, Svalbard Church and Longyearbyen's municipal government in close cooperation with The Governor of Svalbard.
